How to Keep Faces Consistent in AI Image Editing

Why AI image edits subtly change your model's face, and seven practical techniques to keep the same identity across every generation.

You upload a photo of your model, change the outfit with AI, and something feels off. The face looks almost right: the eyes are a slightly different color, the skin looks waxier, the expression has shifted. Run another edit on top of that result and the face drifts even further.

This is the most common complaint in AI photo editing, and most of it is avoidable. This guide explains why faces change and gives you seven techniques you can apply immediately.


Why AI Changes Faces

Image models do not cut your model's face out of the reference and paste it onto a new body. Every generation redraws the entire image from scratch, guided by the references you provide. Each redraw introduces small errors: skin gets smoothed, lip color shifts, eye color drifts.

When you chain edits together — dress the model, take that result and recolor it, then edit again — those small errors accumulate with every pass, like a photocopy of a photocopy.

A typical try-on flow looks like this. When it works well, all three images show the same person in the same pose:

1. Start With a Sharp, High-Resolution Face

The model can only preserve detail it can actually see. A blurry or tiny face forces the AI to invent the missing details, and what it invents is a slightly different person.

Use a reference where the face is:

  • High resolution — at least 1000px on the short side, more is better;
  • Sharp and well lit — no motion blur, no heavy shadows across the face;
  • Unobstructed — no sunglasses, no hair covering half the face.

2. One Generation Per Edit

Every extra generation is another full redraw of the face. A common chain looks like this:

  → "put a burgundy hoodie on the model"

  → "recolor the hoodie to light gray"

The face in the final image has already been redrawn twice. To show how far this can go, the same image below was edited five times in a row, changing only the hoodie color each time. Compare the second pass with the fifth: the skin becomes waxy, hair strands break down, and the lips and gaze slowly drift away from the original.

Merge steps whenever you can. If the next edit does not depend on the previous result, go back to the original photo and put every requirement into a single prompt — for example, ask for the light gray hoodie directly instead of generating a burgundy one first. That way the face is redrawn only once.


3. Add a Face Anchor When You Must Chain Edits

Sometimes a chain is unavoidable. You approved the outfit in step one and now only want a color variant of that exact result. The fix is to upload the original photo as an additional reference and point the model at it explicitly in the prompt. The original acts as an anchor, so errors stop accumulating from step to step.

Prompt:
Recolor the hoodie to light gray. Take the face exactly from photo 2.

The difference in a single step may look small, but the anchor is what keeps a long chain from sliding into a different-looking person.


4. Write Down What Must Not Change

Models follow explicit constraints far more reliably than implied expectations. Include a short freeze list in every edit, and number your reference images:

Change only the top. Keep the model's face, hairstyle, pose, camera angle,
trousers, shoes and background exactly as in photo 1.
Do not add any accessories or logos.

Two details matter:

  • Number your references — "as in photo 1", "the fit from photo 4". Vague wording like "the first image" is often misread.
  • Ban additions explicitly. Models like to improve on your idea.

Without a freeze list, the pose is the first thing to go. The prompt below asked only for a clothing change:

Unrequested accessories and prints are just as common, and a single sentence in the prompt prevents most of them:

5. Generate a Small Batch and Select

Even with a well-written prompt there is natural variance between generations. The two images below came from the same inputs and the same prompt. One keeps the model's hand in her jeans pocket; in the other the hand moved into the hoodie pocket on its own.

Professionals do not generate once and ship it. Generate two to four variants and pick the faithful one — it is still far cheaper and faster than reshooting.


6. Zoom In Before You Publish

Face drift hides in small details. Check every image at 100% before it goes to a client:

  • Eye color — the most common silent change; invisible in a thumbnail;
  • Lip color and shape — tends to get more saturated with each redraw;
  • Skin detail — beauty marks and freckles disappearing or appearing;
  • Accessories and prints — caps, jewelry or logos that were never requested;
  • Pose and framing — hand position, stance, crop height.

Thirty seconds of checking saves an awkward conversation later.


7. Use the Strongest Model Tier for Face-Critical Work

Differences between model tiers show up first in face fidelity. Fast, low-cost tiers are great for drafts, layout tests and non-portrait assets. For final images where the identity has to match — client deliverables, catalog photos, campaign visuals — use the strongest tier available and the highest output resolution. The cost per image is still a small fraction of a reshoot.

  3. When chaining, the original photo is attached as a face anchor.
  4. The prompt contains an explicit freeze list and a ban on additions.
